Matt Sheppard wins thrilling Super DIRTcar Series victory

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 18, 2016 - Josh Richards dominated the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series DIRTcar Nationals opener on Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park.

Richards, a three-time series champion, took the top position in his qualifying group earlier in the night and then battled through lapped traffic and held off Dale McDowell in the 50-lap feature to score his first series win of the season. The 27-year-old Richards entered DIRTcar Nationals with a string of wins and top-five runs, and built momentum into the series opener.

"It has been a lot of fun," Richards said. "We gambled a little bit on tires, so I was kind of nervous and didn't know how it was going to hold up. We got stuck in lapped traffic and actually moved up [the race track] and gained speed.

"The guys have been giving me great cars every night, it's been a dream to drive them, and it has been a fun speed weeks."

Matt Sheppard, the reigning Super DIRTcar Series champion, entered DIRTcar Nationals after an off-season of flux saw him start his own team. The driver proved Thursday night that in spite of the challenges, he is still one to beat.

Larry Wight, last year's DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block Week champion, started on the feature pole but lost the lead after a short battle with Rick Laubach. Laubach led the field for 22 laps, holding off the previous night's winner Tim Fuller. As Laubach tried to work his way through traffic, Sheppard closed with Wight close behind. Sheppard and Wight got the run on Laubach and quickly drove around.

"This is unreal," Sheppard said of his victory. "It was such a crazy off-season for us; building this team in such a short period of time. We can say I'm going out on my own but not really. I got a ton of great people that have stepped up to help out. Everything really came together. The crew has been busting their butt all night on this car. We had trouble in qualifying, we had trouble in the heat race and they never gave up. Man two races in and we are sitting in Victory Lane already that is awesome."

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series return for night two at DIRTcar Nationals as the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds takes on its night three.

Tim Fuller wins Super DIRTcar Series DIRTcar Nationals opener

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 17, 2016 — Scott Bloomquist was the class of the field Wednesday night at DIRTcar Nationals as he rebounded from bad luck the previous night to score the Swamp King Championship.

Bloomquist, who suffered an engine failure the night before, set the night’s overall quick time during qualifying and started the feature in the fourth position. He quickly charged to the second position and after a caution on lap six battled past Dale McDowell for the lead.

Jonathan Davenport charged late for the lead in the 40-lap feature but was not able to get around Bloomquist.

“[The car] was really good,” Bloomquist said. “I see we have some things to do to help ourselves in traffic - it took a while for heat to get in the front tires so I’m going to work on that.”

Tim Fuller battled Billy Dunn in the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds opener at Volusia, scoring the first series win of 2016.

Fuller, who started the feature in third, battled to the lead by lap five. Dunn, who spent much of the night in second, battled after a mid-race caution and closed in on Fuller. After a side-by-side battle, Dunn moved to the high line and pulled away.

“He scared me there in three and four – he got beside of me once,” Fuller said of Dunn. “Then I figured he went back to the top, the top has been so dominant here. I figured if he was going to get by me on the bottom he was going to be the dominant car. I got up there on the top, everybody went to the bottom, so I started running the top and it worked out.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series makes its DIRTcar Nationals debut Thursday night as the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds takes on its night two.

Ray Bollinger wins DIRTcar UMP Modified feature and Josh Richards wins DIRTcar Late Models feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 16, 2016 — Nick Hoffman wrapped up his blockbuster DIRTcar Nationals run on Tuesday night as he claimed the UMP Modified Week championship and scored his second ‘Big Gator’ trophy.

Hoffman, who was the class of the field all week with the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, picked up three wins, the Gator Championship and the overall championship. He finished sixth in the final triple-20 feature.

“I just can’t believe it,” Hoffman said. “I can’t thank everybody enough who makes this possible. It’s unreal to come down here and beat the guys we did and to do it so many times.”

Tuesday night had three Triple-20 features lined up by the UMP Modified championship week point standings. Ray Bollinger picked up the win in the final Triple-20 feature of the night after battling with Will Krup.

“I can’t say enough for my crew,” Bollinger said. “They pull it down here and I get to fly down here. I feel like a NASCAR star coming down here and I finally got my gator.”

NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Justin Allgaier won the second Triple-20 after he ran through the field and battled Scotty Kincaid. For the driver nicknamed ‘Little Gator,’ the win was even more meaningful as he was able to bring home his own little gator trophy.

“We struggled this week really bad - I can’t thank these guys enough,” Allgaier said. “We built a new racecar to come down here. We’ve been trying to learn it and we finally did tonight.”

Derrick Ramey held off Joey Jensen through the first Triple-20 feature of the night to claim his first victory of DIRTcar Nationals.

Josh Richards dominated night two with the DIRTcar Late Model Series. Through the 30-lap feature Richards held off a charging Jonathan Davenport and Tim McCreadie to score his first DIRTcar Nationals victory of the week.

“It sure wasn’t pretty but we will take it,” Richards said. “I saw [Davenport] in second and knew I had to give it all I had.

“It was touchy out there. There was a lot of traction in spots. If you could get though it smoothly, which was hard to do, then you could gain some speed. You don’t really know when you’re leading who’s behind you and how fast they’re going. It was a handful but we will take it, we have a long week to go.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds take on Volusia Speedway Park Wednesday night as the DIRTcar Late Models crown the Swamp King Champion.

Billy Moyer Jr. wins DIRTcar Late Models opener

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 15, 2016 — Nick Hoffman continued his DIRTcar Nationals dominance Monday night as he held off Austin Dillon to score the Gator Championship and the coveted ‘Big Gator’ trophy.
Hoffman drew the number one starting pill in the night’s redraw but faced stiff competition from NASCAR stars Austin and Ty Dillon, and Jason Beaulieu as the green flag flew on the night’s 30-lap feature at Volusia Speedway Park.

Hoffman jumped out to a nearly two second lead early as the Dillon brothers worked to run him down. By lap 13, Ty Dillon caught Hoffman and began a multi-lap battle for the lead. With lapped traffic in play, Hoffman was able to again extend out his lead.

As Hoffman maintained a consistent one-and-a-half-second lead over Ty Dillon, Beaulieu began battling Austin Dillon for the third position. Billy Workman Jr. slowed to a stop on the front straight on lap 27 and bunched the field back up as the yellow flag flew.

“I was kind of hoping that thing was just going to go straight to the checkered but I just didn’t want to do what Ty did the other night and screwed up in lapped traffic or miss my marks in the last two laps,” Hoffman said. “It was nail-biting coming to that green with two to go. I knew if I could make three perfect laps that that was all it was going to take.”

When the feature returned to green with three laps remaining, Hoffman held off Ty Dillon as Beaulieu battled to the third position. It was the third win of DIRTcar Nationals for Hoffman.

“I knew all of my fate relied on that redraw but man this thing was so good I think we could have won that thing from 10th,” Hoffman said. “I knew Ty would be really tough and I just held onto it and those lappers were a little scary.

Billy Moyer Jr. held off Dennis Erb Jr. and Shane Clanton to win the 30-lap DIRTcar Late Models opener.

Moyer battled past the pole-sitter early as Erb and Clanton traded the second position for much of the feature. As the laps dwindled down, Erb and Clanton pulled within striking distance of the leader who struggled to navigate lapped traffic. With 10 laps to go, the top three were separated by less than a second. As Clanton faded, Erb stayed close to Moyer but was not able to get around.

“I’ve never ran good in a feature here,” Moyer said. “I’m really excited, we finally got a Gator and that means a lot to me. The car was phenomenal, I tend to overtighten myself a lot, so it was great having my dad here to help me on the adjustments. We’ll go to work tomorrow and hopefully get another one.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The DIRTcar Late Models return Tuesday night as the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds takes on its final night at Volusia Speedway Park with the Triple-20s.

Brian Ruhlman wins his first ever DIRTcar Nationals feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 14, 2016 —Brad Sweet continued his DIRTcar Nationals dominance Sunday night as he scored his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series feature victory of the season and claimed the coveted ‘Big Gator’ trophy by winning the Sprint Week championship.

Joey Saldana led the field to the green flag in the 30-lap feature at Volusia Speedway Park but it was Kasey Kahne Racing’s Sweet who dominated much of the night. Sweet battled past Saldana for the lead on a lap 10 restart and even with a late race challenge from Lucas Wolfe, remained out front for the succeeding 20 laps.

“It’s unbelievable,” Sweet said. “The competition is so stiff that you have to put yourself in position each and every time you’re on the race track and it’s not easy, one mistake and you’re behind the eight ball. Tonight we did pretty much everything right, and luckily the dash draw helped us there because it was going to be a tough track to pass on.”

Sweet, who won the season opening series event at Volusia Speedway Park on Friday night, edged Greg Hodnett, who had been the picture of consistency all week, by just four points to win the ‘Big Gator.’ With Daryn Pittman’s 2015 Sprint Week championship, it is the second year in a row Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb has claimed the ‘Big Gator’ trophy.

On the second night of Gator Qualifying for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, Brian Ruhlman, a Clarklake, Mich. native, muscled his way to the top spot on lap one and held off challenges from Jacob Hawkins and NASCAR star Austin Dillon to claim his first DIRTcar Nationals victory.

“I’ve always wanted a Gator, and we have been so close,” Ruhlman said. “I have to thank [my girlfriend] Veronica, it’s just her and I down here this weekend.

“We ran it wide-open all the way around there. If they were going to beat me, they were going to have to earn it.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. On Monday night, the DIRTcar Late Models join the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds as the modifieds compete in for the Gator Championship.

Donny Schatz rebounds, wins World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 13, 2016 — Ty Dillon looked to be the driver to beat in Saturday night’s DIRTcar UMP Modified Gator Qualifying feature at DIRTcar Nationals but Nick Hoffman had other ideas as he cruised to his third win at Volusia Speedway Park.

Dillon dominated the early part of the 20-lap modified feature building a large lead over Hoffman and Ray Bollinger. As the laps wound down though, Hoffman, who has been the class of the field at DIRTcar Nationals, closed the gap. As lapped traffic came into play, Hoffman made his move. He battled past Dillon off of turn four and took the lead on lap 16.

Dillon, a driver in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, tried to close the gap, but Hoffman marched to the win.

“Ty was really good,” Hoffman said. “Once I got to about halfway I started to momentum my car around. It was really good. I think he still would have had me if it wasn’t for that lap traffic deal. We’ll take them as we can get them.”

Hoffman won Tuesday and Wednesday night’s modified features.

One night after his first did-not-finish result since September 2013, Donny Schatz rebounded at DIRTcar Nationals as he battled with Brad Sweet to score his first World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win of the 2016 season.

Sweet, who won the Outlaws season opener on Friday night, was the class of the field on Saturday as he led 17 laps. Restarts proved pivotal for Schatz though as one on lap 16 eliminated Sweet’s lead and another on lap 21 gave Schatz the opportunity he needed to get around Sweet.

Schatz said he was happy to move past the pressure of the once two-year-old streak and start building momentum toward an eighth series championship.

“It’s kind of a relief to be over that hill of having that DNF that’s been haunting us for I guess 180 races or whatever,” Schatz said. “Now we can just focus on trying to win races.”
“I’d be even better if we could win all of them,” Schatz said. “That’s what this team shoots for, that’s what they aim for, and that’s what they work hard for. We’re here tonight and that’s all that matters.”
Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns on Sunday for its final night at DIRTcar Nationals. The DIRTcar UMP Modifieds returns for night two of Gator Qualifying.

Trent Young Claims DIRTcar UMP Modified feature win

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 12, 2016 — In front of one of the largest crowds in DIRTcar Nationals history, Kasey Kahne Racing’s Brad Sweet and Daryn Pittman fought a pitched battle for the season opening World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series feature on Friday night. When the checkered flag fell, it was Sweet who took the win.

Sweet and Pittman started side-by-side in the 30-lap main event at Volusia Speedway Park. The two teammates traded the lead through the opening laps of the night’s event as reigning series champion and the previous night’s winner, Donny Schatz, battled through the field.

By the midway point of the feature Schatz had moved into second and was challenging Pittman for the lead when his night was cut short by an engine failure on lap 21. It was his first did-not-finish result in 178 World of Outlaws features – a streak that stretched back to September, 2013.

Through the closing laps of the feature, Pittman and Sweet battled for the lead through lapped traffic with Sweet making a last lap pass of Pittman for the win.

“I’ll tell you what, we definitely needed that lap traffic,” Sweet said. “Daryn did a great job, you know. It’s pretty awesome for Kasey Kahne Racing to be battling for first and second. I know what it’s like to lose on the last lap. I’ve won some like that; I’ve lost some like that. Hats off to those guys, they did a great job all night.”

In the 20-lap DIRTcar UMP Modified feature, Trent Young held off a hard-charging Nick Hoffman to score his first ever DIRTcar Nationals victory.

A wreck between the top two cars, A.J. Fike and Dave Jamison, midway through the feature put Young in the lead. Hoffman battled his way into second and tried to close the gap in the final laps, but Young held firm.

“It feels amazing. This is a dream come true,” Young said. “I was pretty content just riding in third. I was going to be happy with that if the race went like it was. I got lucky to make it through that wreck. I don’t want to win one like that, but I wanted one here so I’ll take it any way I can get it. I hate that that happened to Fike. I really couldn’t see what happened but I know it was pretty nasty, and I got lucky to make it through it.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series takes on its second night at DIRTcar Nationals on Saturday and the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds return for night five of DIRTcar Nationals.

Tyler Nicely holds off Dillon to win DIRTcar UMP Modified feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 11, 2016 — Donny Schatz battled through the field Thursday night to win the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions feature at DIRTcar Nationals.

Schatz, who drives for NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, started in 10th position and quickly moved forward. He caught the top-three drivers by lap 15 and passed leader Jason Johnson on lap 20. As Johnson worked to hold off Dale Blaney, Schatz built an insurmountable lead in the final 10 laps.

“It’s an incredible race team,” said Schatz, a seven-time World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series champion. “I didn’t want to have to call the boss tonight and tell him I left anything on the table - just an incredible effort from these guys.”

“You have to go where everyone else isn’t,” Schatz said. “I just had to find a way around. Once we got going, it was just awesome.”

Tyler Nicely fought a wheel-to-wheel battle with Brian Ruhlman and held off NASCAR star Ty Dillon to pick up his first DIRTcar UMP Modified win of DIRTcar Nationals. The win ended the two race streak for Nick Hoffman, but Hoffman had reason to celebrate as the builder of Nicely’s Elite Chassis.

Jason Beaulieu battled with Ruhlman through the first half of the 20-lap feature. Nicely worked his way forward and by lap 11 took over the lead. Nicely and Ruhlman traded position through the next eight laps. As lapped traffic came into play, Dillon closed the gap and passed Ruhlman for second. Off the final turn, Dillon was side-by-side with Nicely, but Nicely held the lead and took the checkered flag.

“It’s awesome to be able to race with someone you trust and not tear up your equipment,” Nicely said of Ruhlman. “I just knew if I could keep it down there in the good dirt, hopefully I could get a good enough run to clear him.”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Saturday, Feb. 20. The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series kicks off its 2016 season and the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds return on Friday for night four of DIRTcar Nationals.

Nick Hoffman wins two in a row with DIRTcar UMP Modifieds

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 10, 2016 — Dave Blaney held off Donny Schatz to score the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions feature win on Wednesday night at DIRTcar Nationals.

Blaney, a former NASCAR driver and the 1995 World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series champion, started the 30-lap feature at Volusia Speedway Park in the second position and battled with polesitter Joey Saldana early. Blaney took the lead and had to contend with Schatz who charged forward from a sixth place starting position.

The two drivers battled in lapped traffic with Schatz getting around Blaney at one point for the lead. After a restart, Blaney pulled ahead in clean air and built a sizeable lead over Schatz. It was Blaney’s 47th career All Star victory.

“If I could just not make a mistake I felt like I had a fair chance,” Blaney said. “We did get fortunate with that caution, the driver was wearing out a little bit, and I can’t believe we won this race. I’m thrilled to be driving for Dan Motter. I was really glad we were out here and competitive tonight and in the hunt. Then to win it is awesome. I can’t thank my guys enough and Dan for putting this together.”

In the 30-lap DIRTcar UMP Modified feature, Nick Hoffman made it two wins in a row, battling former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Stremme early and holding off other NASCAR notables Ty Dillon and Kenny Wallace through the feature.

Wallace kept Hoffman within striking distance but was never able to get close enough to complete a pass for the lead.

“[Kenny Wallace] is tough everywhere we go. I knew he would race us clean when I looked up at the scoreboard and saw he was in second. They told me in the infield to hustle it for three more laps at the end, so I gave it everything I had,” Hoffman said. “Everything held together and we got us another Gator (trophy).”

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run through Sunday, Feb. 20. The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions and DIRTcar UMP Modifieds return on Thursday for night three of DIRTcar Nationals.
